It’s supper time! January is National Sunday Supper Month. Family dinners used to be considered a nightly tradition, but in 2018, that may not always be realistic. The Sunday Supper initiative was started to get families together at least one day a week to share a meal. Having dinner as a family is a way to connect, but it also comes with several other benefits. According to the Family Dinner Project, people who eat dinner with their family have higher self-esteem, better academic performance, and a greater sense of resilience. They are also at a lower risk of depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Eating together can also make kids more likely to eat fruits and vegetables. Family meals can even be a great stress reliever. Make it a family affair! Spend more time together by getting everyone involved in grocery shopping and meal preparation. Take your family to the local farmer’s market on Saturday to get some fresh ingredients for your Sunday meal. Once the month is over, try to maintain family dinners, and don’t limit yourself to just Sundays. If your family has the time, try to eat together 3 to 5 days a week. It’s fun and beneficial for everyone. Let 2018 be the year your family reconnects!
