Sunday Supper Month: Families Connect One Meal at a Time

It’s supper time! January is National Sunday Supper Month. Family dinners used to be considered a nightly tradition, but in 2018, that may not always be realistic. The Sunday Supper initiative was started to get families together at least one day a week to share a meal.

Having dinner as a family is a way to connect, but it also comes with several other benefits. According to the Family Dinner Project, people who eat dinner with their family have higher self-esteem, better academic performance, and a greater sense of resilience. They are also at a lower risk of depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Eating together can also make kids more likely to eat fruits and vegetables. Family meals can even be a great stress reliever.

Make it a family affair! Spend more time together by getting everyone involved in grocery shopping and meal preparation. Take your family to the local farmer’s market on Saturday to get some fresh ingredients for your Sunday meal.

If you’re a SNAP customer, find a Saturday market near you to bring home twice the fruits and veggies for your dinner with Double Up Food Bucks:

Maryvale Farmers Market at El Oso Park
Payson Farmers Market
Roadrunner Farmers Market
Prescott Winter Market
Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market
Uptown Farmers Market
OCLC Our Harvest/Nuestra Cosecha (and CSA)
Authentically Ajo Farmers Market

With Double Up Food Bucks, SNAP customers can double up on locally-grown, fresh produce for an even more healthy and delicious family meal. Broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, lemons, and many other delicious healthy fruits and veggies are in season this month.

Here’s a recipe your family can make using two of Arizona’s in season vegetables: cabbage and carrots!

Pan-Fried Cabbage with Bacon and Shallot

Keep up with the tradition! Once the month is over, try to maintain family dinners, and don’t limit yourself to just Sundays. If your family has the time, try to eat together 3 to 5 days a week. It’s fun and beneficial for everyone. Let 2018 be the year your family reconnects!
