This month, we’re exploring some of the ways schools can act as hubs of connection and promote wellness for children, families, and entire communities. When schools and communities unite, they create opportunities for everyone to thrive. One incredible example of this work in our state is the Isaac Family Resource Center – a collaboration between the Isaac School District, community members and various organizations with a shared vision of wellness and success for their neighborhood. September is Hunger Action Month, an opportunity to spread the word, take action on the hunger crisis, and dedicate ourselves to a solution. Join the #HungerActionMonth conversation all month long, and watch our video below for more ways you can make a difference. If you ask a child what their favorite subject in school is, you’re likely to hear “recess” as a response. Recess and interactive P.E. classes are not only a fun break from academic workouts in school – they also play a critical role in keeping our children healthy and happy. We traditionally view health as the result of individual choices. While this can be true, there are other factors, including the resources and norms of our community that influence our choices without us always being aware. So how can we be sure the factors around us that impact our health are doing so for the better? As a leader in your community, you have the power to create healthy environments and policies where you live, work, and play. Together, we can create vibrant communities that support healthy choices and lifestyles.
